71st Anniversary of the Battle of Midway

It was the 71st Anniversary of the Battle of Midway this year.  We didn't have anyone fly in for this one, but we have really only had big ceremonies on the 5 year marks.  We had most of the island population out, as we did the week before on Memorial Day.  There wasn't that much else going on this week.  Without volunteers and visitors, all we do is work, and I try not to get too detailed about that.  Just the interesting stuff.

John Klavitter says a few words at the Battle of Midway Memorial on June 4.

Sam made a few more flower arrangements for the memorial.

I've been seeing the Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins quite a bit lately on the trips to and from Eastern Island.
This Masked booby was sitting on a nest on Eastern Island.  There are only about 2 or 3 nests a year at Midway.

Another building shot.  This is the old Delta Barracks by the dining facility.

It's been cloudy a lot lately, so the sunsets over North Beach are nice when the clouds break a little.

Hi Pete,

A very nice sunset.

It remains the goal of my wife and I to somehow end up as volunteers at Midway some day. Gotta get the rest of the kids out of the house first, though. We keep looking at the volunteer forms and thinking, "Some day."

You've heard this many times before but thanks! for your blogs. It's a wonderful thing to see on Mondays from work.

Are those chicks raiding the ceremony front and center? Too cute. Love that booby shot!

Enjoy reading your posts. I was an air traffic controller on Midway Island from 10/69 to 09/70. I believe I lived in Delta barracks because I remember it was right next to the mess hall. Your pictures bring back memories, is the old control tower still there?
Keep the posts coming!

Love your blog, Pete! I was on Midway May 1979-May 1980. Don't know if I'll ever get back, but would love to volunteer for a stint! :)

Thanks all, I'll mention it on my blog when we are able to take volunteers again. I hope it won't be too long.
We had to keep moving the chicks away from the flowers for the ceremony because the kept picking at them. They didn't really get the message though.
Rick, the old control tower is not there anymore. I'm not positive, but I think the Navy took that down when they left.
